It has been days since I wanted to write about La Exorcista (The Serpent and Sister Ophelia, 2022). So I decided to imitate Donald Glover and interview myself about the origins of this horror story, which I co-wrote with Adrián García Bogliano and Ricardo Farías. It’s an interview in progress that will continue to grow as memories (or fears) come to my mind.

When and how did the idea of doing La Exorcista (The Serpent and Sister Ophelia) come about?

If I’m right, it was around 2017. Ricardo Farías and I were a bit frustrated because another project of ours, much more complex in thematic terms, was having trouble getting funding. So we decided to look for a new idea that would be easier to sell and produce.

What was that other project that had financing problems?

I can’t talk much about it because a few years ago we adapted it and sold it as a series to an international network. So I rather hope that it will get produced soon and people will be able to see it. The only thing I can tell you is that it is a horror series with teenage characters and a supernatural object from the past.

Well, back to La Exorcista (The Serpent and Sister Ophelia), you were telling me the origin of the idea.

Yes, as I was saying, we started looking for new ideas. I remember that we made a creativity game to combine movies that we liked. We wrote the names of our favorite horror movies on 50-60 post-its and randomly combined them two at a time, to see if that triggered anything in our brains. And I may be making this up because this happened several years ago, but I think the combination of post-its that produced the first spark was The Exorcist and Jaws. The idea of making a movie that combined demonic possession with a fast-paced hunt.

How did you come up with the idea that the protagonist could be a nun?

Doing some research, we discovered that the Catholic Church does not allow women to perform exorcisms. So we thought of a protagonist who, in addition to fighting the devil, had to rebel against the status quo in order to do good.

At what point did Adrián García Bogliano join the project?

Since the beginning. We told him about the high concept and he got on the boat immediately. This was before the pandemic, so we had a few face-to-face meetings to outline the main points of the plot and the characters. We met at Toks in Xola and Cuauhtémoc to brainstorm, surrounded by families and office workers who also ate there. Toks are good places to write horror movies. They are quiet restaurants with decent coffee and comfortable seats.

What other movies influenced La Exorcista (The Serpent and Sister Ophelia)?

I think each of us put in a few of his own influences, so I’ll talk about mine. Evil Dead, The Prophecy, Rosemary’s Baby, and Cujo are titles I remember bringing up. But the most important reference for me was always Jaws.

Why?

Because of the way in which the protagonist’s fear conflicts with the mission that he has to fulfill. To beat the shark, Brody has to overcome his fear of water. It’s the perfect character arc in a horror movie and any movie in general. In La Exorcista, Ofelia will not only have to fight against the demons of hell but against her own demons.

What about The Exorcist?

It’s impossible not to think about The Exorcist when you’re writing a movie about possessions (it’s on everyone’s mind), but the truth is that we draw much more inspiration from other titles.

What happened to the script once it was finished?

We tried to get funding to shoot the movie. We applied for the IMCINE tax incentives, but we were not successful. We invested two or three years in that process until we decided to let the project breathe to think of new ways to get it done.

And when did the opportunity come to produce the film with BTF and Pablo Guisa, with Adrián García Bogliano as director?

In the middle of 2021. Ricardo and I were in Colombia producing Shak Tank when we received a call from Pablo Guisa (who knew the story very well) asking us about the script. We told him that it was available, and he told us that there was a possibility of producing it with BTF and Adrián as director. We obviously told him that we loved the idea, and it was then that the film was reborn. The green light came soon and La Exorcista went into production in record time, which was extremely encouraging considering the time we had already invested in it.

In Mexico, it will premiere at Morbido International Film Festival, and it’s going to be be available in all theaters on November 2.

¿CÓMO SURGIÓ LA IDEA DE LA EXORCISTA?

Desde hace días quería escribir sobre La Exorcista (The Serpent and Sister Ophelia, 2022), pero no sabía cómo. Así que decidí imitar a Donald Glover y entrevistarme a mí mismo sobre el orígen de esta historia de terror, que co-escribí con Adrián García Bogliano y Ricardo Farías hace algún tiempo. Se trata de una entrevista en proceso que continuará creciendo conforme los recuerdos (o los sustos) vuelvan a mi mente.

¿Cuándo y cómo surgió la idea de hacer La Exorcista?

Si mi memoria no falla, fue alrededor de 2017. Ricardo Farías y yo estábamos algo frustrados porque otro proyecto nuestro, mucho más complejo en términos temáticos, estaba teniendo problemas para conseguir financiamiento. Así que decidimos buscar una nueva idea que fuera más sencilla de vender y producir. 

¿Cuál era ese otro proyecto que tenía problemas de financiamiento?

No puedo hablar mucho de eso porque hace poco menos de tres años lo adaptamos y lo vendimos como serie a un network internacional. Así que más bien espero que pronto se produzca y la gente pueda verlo. Lo único que puedo adelantar es que es una serie de terror con personajes adolescentes… y un regalo sobrenatural.

Bueno, regresemos a La Exorcista. Me estabas contando el origen de la idea.

Sí, sí. Como decía, empezamos a buscar nuevas ideas. Recuerdo que hicimos un juego de creatividad para combinar películas que nos gustaran. Escribimos los nombres de nuestras películas favoritas de terror en 50-60 post-its y los combinamos aleatoriamente de dos en dos, para ver si eso detonaba algo. Y aquí puede que esté inventando, porque esto sucedió hace varios años, pero creo que la combinación de post-its que provocó el primer chispazo fue El Exorcista y Tiburón. La idea de hacer una película que combinara las posesiones demoníacas con una trepidante cacería.

¿Cómo llegaron a la idea de que la protagonista fuera una monja?

Haciendo un poco de investigación, descubrimos que la Iglesia Católica no permite a las mujeres realizar exorcismos. Así que pensamos en una protagonista que, además de luchar contra el demonio, tuviera que rebelarse contra el status-quo para hacer el bien.

¿En qué momento se sumó Adrián García Bogliano al proyecto?

Desde el principio. Nosotros le contamos el high concept y él se montó al barco de inmediato. Esto fue antes de la pandemia, así que tuvimos algunas reuniones presenciales, tres o cuatro, para delinear los puntos principales de los personajes y la trama. Nos veíamos en el Toks de Xola y Cuauhtémoc para hacer brainstorming, rodeados de familias y oficinistas que también comían allí. Los Toks son buenos lugares para escribir películas de terror. Son restaurantes tranquilos y con asientos cómodos.

¿Qué otras películas influyeron en La Exorcista?

Creo que cada uno de nosotros puso un poco de sus propias influencias, así que hablaré de las mías. El Exorcista influyó más como referencia del subgénero de posesiones que como historia en sí. Evil Dead, La Profecía, El Bebé de Rosemary y Cujo son otros títulos que recuerdo haber traído a colación. Pero la referencia más importante para mí siempre fue Tiburón.

¿Por qué?

Por la forma en que el miedo del protagonista se contrapone con la misión que tiene que cumplir. Para vencer al tiburón, Brody tiene que vencer primero su miedo al agua. Es el arco de personaje perfecto en una película de terror, y en cualquier película en general. En El caso de La Exorcista, Ofelia no sólo tendrá que luchar contra los demonios del infierno, sino contra sus propios fantasmas.

¿Qué pasó con el guión una vez que estuvo terminado?

Intentamos conseguir financiamiento para filmar la película. Aplicamos a los estímulos fiscales del IMCINE, pero no tuvimos éxito. Invertimos en este proceso dos o tres años, hasta que decidimos darle un poco de aire al proyecto para pensar en nuevas formas de llevarlo a cabo. 

¿Y en qué momento surgió la oportunidad de producir la película con BTF y Pablo Guisa, con Adrián García Bogliano como director?

A mediados de 2021. Ricardo y yo estábamos en Colombia produciendo Shak Tank cuando recibimos una llamada de Pablo Guisa (quien conocía muy bien la historia) preguntándonos por el guión. Le dijimos que estaba disponible, y él nos contó que existía la posibilidad de producirlo con BTF con Adrián como director. Nosotros obviamente le dijimos que la idea nos encantaba, y fue allí que la película volvió a nacer. El greenlight llegó pronto y La Exorcista entró en producción en tiempo récord, lo cual fue sumamente alentador, considerando que llevábamos varios años intentando levantarla.

La Exorcista tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Sitges.

En México será estrenada en el Festival Internacional de Cine Fantástico y de Terror Mórbido, y estará disponible en salas de toda la República a partir del 2 de noviembre.
